MiGHTY TACOMA: Photographic Portrait 2010

by The Housewife on October 18, 2010

mighty tacoma exhibit at Tacoma Art MuseumMy friend, Gary Lappier (some of you may know him as “Neighbor Gary” – you know who you are…) recently told me that he’s participating in the MiGHTY TACOMA exhibit that opens this Thursday at the Tacoma Art Museum.  Although Hubby and I would love to be there during the beer garden portion of the evening, odds are good that we’ll be rehearsing Haunted Theatre (since it opens just one day after MiGHTY TACOMA does).  We’ll likely need to go during the 75¢-admission day-time hours, and miss the Third Thursday Free Admission time from 5-8pm.  This is especially disappointing, since we have friends in BQdanza as well, who will be performing during the evening.  This is the trade-off for many folks working in the arts though – there always seems to be something good going on during a rehearsal!

I read through the TAM website for more info on what this exhibit entails, and it seems pretty cool.  Apparently, a bunch of Tacoma-based photographers are being commissioned to show the diversity that is Tacoma (from North-end fancy to the Gritty Tacoma we all know and love, I presume).  It’s going to be an ongoing, interactive exhibit that will involve a display in the gallery itself, as well as an online component.  The Art Museum is also exploring its boundaries by incorporating website visitors’ photos via different social media interfaces.

Let’s just say it – it’s cool that I know someone (who takes awesome photos) that will be involved in the exhibit.  It’s cool that I know folks that will be performing at the opening.  It’s cool that there is a beer, crafted by a local Tacoma brewery (the Harmon), that will be available at the opening (what’s better than drinking while looking at art?).  It’s cool that an art museum is presenting an emerging, interactive exhibit and it’s cool that the museum is also integrating a social media component.  That’s about 5 different kinds of cool.  Plus cheap.  I’m not really sure how you can go wrong here.  Unless you have rehearsal.  Then you only get 3 out of 5 cool points.  Still an overall good cool score.  Of course, what do I know?  I’m the one that admits to not being cool.  I think that it’s my duty as a step-mother to avoid coolness.  You know, for my step-daughter’s sake.  No one wants a cool stepmom.  Trust me.

This interactive celebration and creative exercise in commemoration of Tacoma Art Museum’s 75th Anniversary Year asks: who are we and who will we be together tomorrow?

Also not cool if you have to miss it for class. I love class, but I will be missing Gary’s super cool exhibit in TAM, BQDanza’s (of which I am a member) performance in the Tolefson Plaza , and BareFoot Collective’s (of which I am a Co-Director) dance film night in the Museum of Glass. This Thursday is a very cool night for arts in Tacoma indeed! While I think being in class is just as cool as being in rehearsal, I agree that we get only 3 out of the 5 cool points. Hmph. I am tired of this silly not being able to do it all thing that seems to come with adulthood!

Steph, I love you, and I don’t think it’s likely that you were able to do everything you wanted in childhood either. I mean, some people might have been able to… but you’re interested in EVERYTHING. And I’m pretty sure you still only had the 24 hours each day, even before you were an adult!

Love,
Melissa
